The following brief statement establishes a comparison between the business done in the years 1893 and 1899.

The revenue for 1895 was, in round figures, $2,080,000 and in 1899 over $3,300,000.

In connection with the Suitors Fund, receipts representing an aggregate amount of over $228,000 were made out in 1899, while vouchers for payments show that a sum of $242,762 had to be accounted for through this Department.

The Suitors Fund did not form part of the duties of any officer of the Treasury until 1896 when an amendment in the law in respect of this Fund placed upon this Department the responsibility and clerical duties attaching to it. As to the measure of its responsibilities and duties I believe you have formed a correct estimate.

To emphasize the increase of work attaching to their posts I beg leave to invite your attention to the bulky volume shown by the present Journal*. Whereas in 1893 it was a book of 300 folios, to day it numbers 500 folios.
